If the door will not latch then the washer will not start. The lid switch is the part on top loading washing machines that sends the machine a signal indicating that the door is closed and that it is safe for the machine to run. Pull down on it and the door will open. The door lock secures the washer door shut during operation.

Reach up inside of the unit near where the door lock is and you will feel a small tab at the bottom of the lock assembly.
