Of stuff on it. Building a roof for a single car garage is easy but there are a few thing you should take into account such as the shape and structure of the rafters. The wooden joists or beams over your garage help hold your roof in place. The horizontal bottom chords of most garage trusses are designed to carry the weight of drywall and insulation.

If you have another floor above your garage the ceiling floor structure can usually support up to 40 lbs sqft including the weight of the floor above it. It is a waterproofing layer made of regular felt stacked above the solid. So if your ceiling is unfinished you have some excess carrying capacity up there. If you do not have another floor above the ceiling trusses may only be able to hang a maximum of 10 lbs sqft.

Build the components from weather resistant lumber if you want to build a durable roof for your garage. If you have an attic over your garage these joists also bear the load of your attic flooring and any materials you store in the attic.
